Fishway - Passage 309 - Gambsheim

Some earlier reviews had made it sound as if Fishway Passage 309 was free, but that is not true. Admission is €2.50 per person, with a reduced rate for children and students, and a family ticket available. It is not a huge amount of money, but even at that price we felt it was poor value. We went in expecting to see fish moving through the passage or at least get some sense of how it worked, but there was nothing visible at all during our visit. The viewing windows were there, but they were empty, and the explanations offered very little beyond the most basic information.

What made it more disappointing is that the setting itself could have been quite interesting if there had been something happening. The idea of a fishway is important for the ecology of the river, and it would have been nice to see that in practice. Instead, we walked through fairly quickly, hoping something would appear, but it never did. The whole visit lasted only a few minutes and left us wondering why we had paid for it in the first place.

If you are passing by, it might be worth a very brief look just to say you have been, but I would not recommend making a special trip. The concept is good, but the execution is lacking, and without fish to observe there is very little to hold your attention. In the end, we left feeling that the €2.50 per person would have been better spent elsewhere.

A very educational place for all ages! I went there biking in a sunny day and was lovely. The river is beautiful and to know that there is so much life in it is insane. The entrance fee is very affordable and definitely better for the EU citizens. The whole visit takes about an hour, the rest is on you. You can spend as long as you want watching the fish going through the circuit, which happens to be one the biggest in Europe. The place also has interactive games and tons of information for all visitors, from kids to elderly. It’s access friendly, has an elevator. They offer audio guides at the front desk too. Take your time to add this one in your bucket list. You won’t regret it!

A simple attraction underground. Toilets is on the ground floor. You could easily spend 30 minutes in the museum.

Either with the stairs or with the lift, visitors can discover three meters under the ground level the permanent exhibit with information panels about the construction works of the fish way, the channel corrective and improvement works of the Rhine river, the re-introduction of the salmon and fish species living in the river.
